A couple of weeks ago Ottawa Tourism contacted me and asked if I wanted to be their ‘Ottawa Insider’ on Instagram for a week. As a part of the #MyOttawa campaign I would share some photos of my favourite places and things in Ottawa – Of course I wanted to be a part of it. So this week is the week; if you go to Ottawa Tourism Instagram account you’ll see my photos popping up!
I’ve lived in Ottawa for almost 3 years and have gone through the touristy phase before the city started to feel more like home. There are still many areas I have not explored at all and in all honesty I probably won’t – I like my ‘bubble’ that is made of Ottawa’s downtown and my neighbourhoods. Although Ottawa is a fairly big city (for someone from a small town anyway!) with about 1 million people, it has a nice small town feel. This definitely comes from the many vibrant neighbourhoods that I love to explore.
I also love going to the farmer’s market in my neighbourhood, seeing familiar faces in my coffee shop and the strong community feel. Another great thing is that after biking a mere 5km along the famous Rideau Canal I will be right downtown in Canada’s capital staring at the beautiful architecture of the Parliament buildings!
Ottawa is a city you can visit year round, really. I am sure you have heard of the harsh Canadian winters and I wish I could tell you it’s just a legend but it’s not. The winters are cold but also very bright and sunny. February sees the 3 week Winterlude Festival which is actually lots of fun! I mean who wouldn’t love skating and hot chocolate? Spring and summer are ideal time to visit too of course with many festivals and events taking place, but my absolute favourite Ottawa season is fall. And how convenient, it’s almost fall! 😉
There are quite a few green areas and parks in Ottawa and fall is just stunningly colourful. You don’t need to go on a road trip to see the fall foliage, just a stroll along the Rideau Canal will do it. I am very much enjoying the warm weather but cannot wait until it gets colder and I can take in the changing colours of the leaves while sipping my pumpkin spice latte…Mmm.
